Cover Letter Fine-Tuning

Avoid or seriously trim these words in your cover letter (or resume).

I: It's not all about you. But--when you write a cover letter, isn't it? No, it's about your prospective employer, about his or her bottom line, and about how you can and will contribute.

Responsible: Duh. If you weren't responsible, you wouldn't have the accomplishments you've listed. Let them speak for themselves. As the creative writing folks say, "show, don't tell."

Urge: Again, it's not all about you. You may feel urgency about applying to and getting this job. But the rest of the world has other goals and priorities. Don't come off like a used car salesperson from Fargo.
