Business writing is a lot like academic writing. Except when it's not.

• Like academic writing, business writing need to have a point.
• Like academic writing, business writing must be clear and concise.
• Like academic writing, business writing should be proofread carefully for simple errors.

But...

• Unlike academic writing, business writing tends to state the point at the very beginning, not at the end of a contextualizing intro paragraph.
• Unlike academic writing, business writing may rely more heavily on bullet points, subheadings and attachments for all but the bare bones of an idea.
• Unlike academic writing, business writing tends to avoid the "comparison-contrast" model of development.
